Browse thousands of community recipes in Discover. Search, preview, and save recipes without ever leaving the app.
Looking for recipe inspiration? Discover is your gateway to thousands of recipes already saved by the ClipDish community. No need to hunt around the web—everything's right here.
What is Discover?
Discover is ClipDish's built-in recipe search engine, powered by recipes that other users have clipped and saved. Think of it as a curated recipe database where every recipe has already been tested with ClipDish, so you know it'll save correctly.
Key benefits:
- No life story scrolling - Every recipe shows just the good stuff
- Guaranteed to save - These are real recipes, not bookmarks
- Always growing - New recipes added as users save them
- Instant preview - See ingredients and instructions before saving
How to Access Discover
Tap the Discover tab [Icon: TK - magnifyingglass] at the bottom of your screen. You'll land on a search interface with recipe cards scrolling below.

Searching for Recipes
The search bar at the top lets you find exactly what you're craving.
You can search by:
- Recipe name (e.g., "chocolate chip cookies")
- Ingredients (e.g., "chicken thighs")
- Cuisine (e.g., "Thai")
- Food sites (e.g., "Serious Eats")
How to Search
- Tap the search bar at the top
- Type what you're looking for
- Tap Search on the keyboard (or just start scrolling—results update as you type)
- Scroll through the results
Search Tip: Be specific if you want fewer results, or keep it broad to explore. Searching "pasta" gives you hundreds of options, while "cacio e pepe" narrows it down.
Can't Find What You Want?
If Discover doesn't have what you're looking for, tap "Search the web" at the bottom. This opens Safari so you can find the recipe online, then save it using the share extension.
Browsing Without Searching
Don't know what you want? Just start scrolling. Discover shows you a randomized mix of recipes by default, so every time you open it, you'll see something different.
Pull down to refresh and get a new batch of recipes.
Previewing a Recipe
Found something interesting? Tap the recipe card to see the full recipe before saving it.

Each recipe card shows:
- Recipe name
- Food photo
- Site it came from
- Short description
- Bookmark button [Icon: TK - bookmark] in the top-right corner of the image
Quick Save vs. Preview
You have two ways to save:
Quick Save: Tap the bookmark button [Icon: TK - bookmark] on the recipe card. The recipe saves instantly to your library without opening.
Preview First: Tap anywhere else on the recipe card to open the full preview. You'll see:
- Complete ingredient list
- Step-by-step instructions
- Prep/cook times
- Serving size
From the preview, tap the Save button [Icon: TK] at the top to add it to your library.
Why Preview? Some recipes look great in the card photo but turn out to be more complicated than you want. The preview lets you confirm it's what you're looking for before cluttering your library.
Understanding Recipe Cards
Recipe cards are designed to give you just enough information to decide if you're interested.
Title - Recipe name at the top Image - Hero photo (if the recipe has one) Site name - Which food blog it came from Description - Short summary (usually the first line of the recipe intro) Bookmark button - Quick-save overlay (top-right of image)

How Recipes Get Into Discover
Every recipe in Discover was saved by a ClipDish user. When someone clips a recipe from the web, it gets added to the community database (anonymized—we don't track who saved what).
This means:
- Discover grows as the community grows
- Popular recipes show up more often
- Quality tends to be high (people save good recipes)
You won't find every recipe on the internet in Discover, but you'll find thousands of tested, community-approved options.
After You Save a Recipe
Once you save a recipe from Discover (either quick-save or from the preview), it goes straight to your All Recipes view. From there, you can:
- Add it to a collection
- Edit the recipe if you want to customize it
- Share it with friends or family
- Start cooking!
Tap the Recipes tab [Icon: TK - fork.knife] at the bottom or tap (<) and select All Recipes to see your newly saved recipe.
Offline Mode
Discover requires an internet connection. Searching and previewing recipes pulls data from our servers, so you'll need to be online.
Once you save a recipe, though, you can view it offline anytime.
Discover Tips
Start broad, then narrow: Search "dessert" to browse, then refine to "chocolate cake" when you see something you like.
Use the bookmark button: If you're browsing quickly and see something good, tap the bookmark to save it for later. You can always review it in your library.
Check the site name: Recognize a food blog you trust? That's a good sign the recipe will be solid.
Pull to refresh: The recipe order randomizes, so refreshing gives you a fresh perspective on what's available.
Common Questions
Q: Can I add my own recipes to Discover? A: Not directly. Discover is populated automatically when users save recipes from the web. If you want to add a personal recipe, use the Scanning & Manual Entry feature to create it in your library.
Q: Why don't I see every recipe from [favorite food blog]? A: Discover only includes recipes that ClipDish users have saved. If a recipe hasn't been clipped yet, it won't show up. You can always save it directly from Safari and it'll get added to Discover for everyone.
Q: Can I filter by dietary restrictions or cuisine? A: Use the search bar to filter. Searching "vegan dessert" or "Thai curry" will narrow results. We don't have dedicated filter buttons yet, but the search is pretty smart.
Q: Do saved recipes stay in my library forever? A: Yes. Once you save a recipe from Discover, it's yours. Deleting it from your library doesn't remove it from Discover for other users.
