Cook Mode

Published Nov 11, 2025

Coming soon: Hands-free cooking mode with voice control, timers, and step-by-step guidance.

Note: Cook Mode is a planned feature that's not yet available in ClipDish. This documentation describes how it will work when it launches.

What is Cook Mode?

Cook Mode is ClipDish's hands-free cooking experience, designed to guide you through recipes step-by-step without needing to touch your device.

Key features (planned):

  • Voice-controlled navigation through recipe steps
  • Built-in timers for each cooking step
  • Ingredient scaling on the fly
  • Step-by-step photos or videos (if available)
  • Keep your screen awake while cooking
  • Ask Chef Beverly questions without leaving the recipe

Why Cook Mode?

Cooking is messy. Your hands are covered in flour, raw chicken, or sticky dough. The last thing you want to do is fumble with your phone to see the next step.

Cook Mode solves this by letting you:

  • Navigate steps with voice commands (e.g., "Next step")
  • Set timers automatically when instructions mention time
  • Ask questions about the current step without switching screens
  • Keep your device hands-free while you cook

How Cook Mode Will Work (Planned)

Starting Cook Mode

  1. Open a recipe
  2. Tap "Start Cooking"
  3. Cook Mode activates with the first step displayed

The screen stays awake, shows large text for easy reading, and listens for voice commands.

Voice Commands

Say:

  • "Next step" - Move to the next instruction
  • "Previous step" - Go back to the previous instruction
  • "Repeat" - Hear the current step read aloud
  • "Set timer for 10 minutes" - Start a countdown timer
  • "Show ingredients" - Display the ingredient list
  • "Scale to 4 servings" - Adjust ingredient quantities

Timers

When an instruction mentions a time (e.g., "Bake for 30 minutes"), Cook Mode automatically offers to set a timer. Just say "Yes" or tap the timer button.

Ask Chef Beverly

While in Cook Mode, you can ask Chef Beverly questions about the current step without leaving the screen. Just say:

  • "What does sauté mean?"
  • "Can I substitute butter for oil?"
  • "How do I know when it's done?"
