Meet Chef Beverly, your AI cooking assistant. She's here to answer cooking questions, suggest substitutions, and help you troubleshoot recipes in real-time.
What is Chef Beverly?
Chef Beverly is ClipDish's built-in AI assistant powered by advanced language models. Think of her as a knowledgeable cooking friend who's always available to help.
What Chef Beverly can do:
- Answer cooking technique questions (e.g., "What does it mean to sauté?")
- Suggest ingredient substitutions (e.g., "Can I use honey instead of sugar?")
- Provide cooking tips (e.g., "How do I know when chicken is done?")
- Explain measurements (e.g., "How many grams are in a tablespoon of salt?")
- Help with recipe troubleshooting (e.g., "My sauce is too thin, what should I do?")
- Discuss recipes you're viewing in detail (she knows the ingredients and instructions)
What Chef Beverly can't do:
- Generate new recipes from scratch (use Discover or the web for that)
- See photos or videos
- Access the internet for real-time information
- Remember conversations from previous sessions
Important: Chef Beverly requires an internet connection to work. All messages are processed via ClipDish's servers.

How to Access Ask Chef
There are two ways to chat with Chef Beverly:
Method 1: From the Ask Chef Tab
Tap the Ask Chef tab at the bottom of the screen. This opens a general chat where you can ask any cooking-related question.
Best for:
- General cooking questions not tied to a specific recipe
- Learning about ingredients or techniques
- Quick conversions or measurements

Method 2: From a Recipe Detail View
When you're viewing a recipe, tap the floating chat button in the bottom-right corner. This opens Ask Chef with the recipe context already loaded.
Best for:
- Questions about the specific recipe you're cooking
- Substitutions for ingredients in that recipe
- Clarifying confusing instructions
The advantage: Chef Beverly knows the recipe's ingredients and instructions, so she can give you context-aware answers.
Example: If you ask "Can I substitute the buttermilk?" from the Pancakes recipe, she knows you're talking about the buttermilk in that recipe and can suggest alternatives based on the other ingredients.

Using Ask Chef
Starting a Conversation
When you first open Ask Chef (from the tab, not from a recipe), you'll see an empty state with example questions to get you started:
- "How many grams are in a tablespoon of salt?"
- "What is the difference between a red and yellow onion?"
- "How can I make quick pasta sauce?"
Tap an example to send it, or type your own question in the input field at the bottom.
Asking Questions
Type your question in the text field and tap Send (or press return on your keyboard).
Chef Beverly will:
- Show a typing indicator (three dots)
- Process your question
- Respond with an answer
Tips for better answers:
- Be specific (instead of "How do I cook chicken?" try "How do I know when grilled chicken breast is done?")
- Ask one question at a time
- If the answer isn't clear, ask a follow-up question
Conversation Context
Chef Beverly remembers the conversation within the current session. This means:
- You can ask follow-up questions without repeating yourself
- She understands pronouns like "it" or "that" based on previous messages
- Context is preserved for about 10 conversational turns (20 messages total)
However:
- If you close the chat and come back later, the conversation resets
- Each recipe detail view has its own separate conversation
Example conversation:
You: How do I sauté onions?
Chef Beverly: To sauté onions, heat oil or butter in a pan over medium heat, add sliced onions, and cook while stirring occasionally until they're soft and golden, about 5-7 minutes.
You: What if I want them caramelized?
Chef Beverly: For caramelized onions, cook them low and slow over medium-low heat for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add a pinch of salt and sugar to help draw out moisture and speed up caramelization.
Notice how the second question doesn't re-explain "onions"—Chef Beverly remembers the context.
Asking About a Recipe
When you access Ask Chef from a recipe detail view, Chef Beverly has access to:
- Recipe title
- Description
- Ingredients list
- Instructions
- Prep/cook times
- Servings
- Your notes (if you've added any)
This lets you ask questions like:
- "Can I substitute the buttermilk?" (she knows which recipe you're talking about)
- "How long should I bake this for?" (she references the recipe's cook time)
- "What does step 3 mean?" (she can see the instructions)
Pro tip: Mention the specific ingredient or step by name for the clearest answers.

Common Use Cases
Ingredient Substitutions
Question: "Can I use almond milk instead of regular milk?"
Chef Beverly's response: "Yes, you can substitute almond milk 1:1 for regular milk in most recipes. Keep in mind that almond milk is slightly thinner and has a nutty flavor, so it works best in baking and smoothies. For savory dishes, use unsweetened almond milk."
Cooking Techniques
Question: "What does it mean to fold in the egg whites?"
Chef Beverly's response: "Folding is a gentle mixing technique used to incorporate delicate ingredients without deflating them. Use a spatula to cut down through the center of the mixture, sweep along the bottom, and bring it up and over. Rotate the bowl and repeat until just combined."
Troubleshooting
Question: "My pasta sauce is too acidic, what should I do?"
Chef Beverly's response: "To reduce acidity in tomato sauce, add a pinch of sugar or a small amount of butter. You can also add baking soda (just a tiny pinch) to neutralize the acid, but be careful—too much will make it taste soapy. Simmering longer also helps mellow the acidity."
Measurements and Conversions
Question: "How many grams are in a cup of flour?"
Chef Beverly's response: "A cup of all-purpose flour weighs approximately 120-125 grams. However, for the most accurate results, it's best to weigh flour rather than measure by volume, as packing and scooping methods can vary."
Recipe Clarifications (Recipe Context)
Question (from Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe): "Do I need to chill the dough?"
Chef Beverly's response: "The recipe doesn't mention chilling, but chilling cookie dough for 30 minutes to 2 hours helps prevent spreading and enhances flavor. If you're short on time, you can skip it, but chilling is recommended for thicker cookies."
Ask Chef Settings
Chef Beverly doesn't have customizable settings (like tone or verbosity), but you can influence her responses by how you ask questions:
For concise answers: Ask direct, specific questions.
For detailed explanations: Ask open-ended questions like "Can you explain how to...?"
For alternatives: Phrase questions like "What are my options for...?"
Limitations and Tips
What Chef Beverly Doesn't Know
- Future events: She doesn't know today's date or upcoming holidays
- Your kitchen: She doesn't know what ingredients you have at home (you'll need to tell her)
- Your preferences: She doesn't remember past conversations or your dietary restrictions (mention them in each question)
- Real-time data: She can't check current food prices, restaurant hours, or trending recipes
Tips for Best Results
Be specific Instead of "How do I cook this?" ask "How do I roast Brussels sprouts at 400°F?"
Provide context If you're not chatting from a recipe, give her details: "I'm making chicken soup and it's too salty. How can I fix it?"
Ask follow-ups If an answer isn't clear, ask for clarification: "Can you explain that in simpler terms?"
Use recipe context When cooking from a recipe, open Ask Chef from the recipe detail view so she knows what you're making.
